Press Release
May 26, 2017
May 25, 2017 was an exciting day for community members in Koki Thom community, Baray District, Kampong Thom province as it was the opening day of their new Health Center with a delivery and waiting Room!

When the Baray-Santuk Operational District approached ADRA Cambodia at the end of 2016 about building a Health Center, ADRA responded that there was no donor available. Then ADRA began to pray for the project. Within a few weeks Elder Ralph Watts of HELP International approached ADRA Cambodia asking if there were any needs for constructing Health Centers. This providential answer to prayer resulted in construction beginning in mid-February and the new Health Center now completed at the end of May.

A total of 868 participants joined the opening ceremony. These included H.E. Sok Lok, the provincial governor of Kampong Thom, Ralph Watts II who formerly was the ADRA International President for 15 years, and his colleagues Ralph Watts III and James Lanning all representing HELP International who have funded the construction and two more health centers to be started later this year. Also in attendance were Mark Schwisow, ADRA Cambodia Country Director, the District governor and deputy governor and officials from relevant departments as well as local authorities, the Baray-Santuk Operational district director and deputy director and Health Center chiefs, Long Keo, ADRA Cambodia

Project Manager and his colleagues, Saum Sovanny, leader of the local Adventist church, and Koki Thom community members and students.

During the opening ceremony, Long Keo, the Project manager of ADRA Cambodia’s projects in Kampong Thom, presented a summary of the construction process and all the collaborative partners who made the Health Center and Waiting/Delivery room a success. Long Keo also shared about ADRA Cambodia’s two projects in Kompong Thom. First the Baray-Santuk Nutrition for Under-2s and Mothers (BS-NUM) project in 44 villages in 9 communes of Baray and Santuk District is funded by the Canadian Food Grains Bank and ADRA Canada. This is a 50 month project that began in 2015. The program works to improve nutrition for 22,000 household members particularly women in reproduction age and boys and girls under two years. Second project, the Prasat Model Preschool, in Prasat, Chhouk Ksach commune is funded by Kindercare Learning Center and ADRA New Zealand. The project started with building a one room preschool building in 2014, then together with Room to Read Cambodia constructed a primary school building to replace the damaged primary school building at the same site in 2015. The project continues to support technical trainings and infrastructure as well as supporting nutrition education in the community coordinated through the BSNUM project.

In the ceremony, H.E. Sok Lou, Kampong Thom Provincial governor, stated that he is grateful to ADRA Cambodia and the donors who mobilized resources to build this health center including the additional delivery and waiting rooms. He appealed to the operational health district to ensure consistent high quality service for the community and to professionally maintain the building. Both ADRA Cambodia and Ralph Watts from Help International expressed similar feelings of happiness and thanks to the great cooperation from all level of government authority and relevant partners for the good activities to improve community development with responsibility and sustainability.

A community representative participating in the event expressed, “I am deeply happy for these new health services present in their community and we would like to say thank you to donors and relevant officers who made this happen.”

A hand-over document was signed between the ADRA Country Director and the Baray-Santuk Operational district director. As well new trees were planted to mark this official opening of the Health Center with deliver and waiting room along with the traditional ribbon cutting ceremony.
