MY DAUGHTER'S GOOD HABITS

Descriptive of Changes:

Every time a Village Health Support Group memberconducts Health Education through a Mothers’ Club, hygiene and sanitation - especially focusing on handwashing - is always integrated with other topics. This includes a demonstration of the proper ways forwashing hands. During the Mothers’ Club meeting, refreshments are prepared for babies and toddlerswho accompany their mothers and these littlechildren are also trained in the proper way to washhands before eating something. At one Mothers’Club, when the refreshment time comes, withouteven being asked a small eighteen month old girlnamed Yin Romonea quickly goes to wash her handbefore eating. All the participants saw andappreciated the good habit of this little girl.

When the Village Health Support Group memberasked Romonea, “before eating, what do you do?”Romonea answered with only a few words that shejust knew “tai” which means “wash hands”. Whenasked “what do you use to wash youer hands?”Romonea answered “bou”” which mean “with soap”.This smart baby girl is the first daughter of Ms OumBunleang who lives in Boeung Village, part of theBoeung Health Centre catchment area. Ms OumBunleang said, “I am interested and always join inthis Mothers’ Club because I can learn best practicesfor caring for health.

Romonea and her mother

I have practice the good advise and habits received from Mothers’ Club until I gave birth to my daughter. I practice the good hygiene and sanitation, child care and everything else. Before breastfeeding, I always clean my hands and my breasts to remove bacteria. This habit has inspired my daughter to do the same. When my daughter was around 9 months, every time I breastfed her, she began taking a clean cloth to clean my breast again even after I already cleaned it.”

Ms Oum Bunleang said that “I am very happy and proud with my clever daughter who has formed a good habit for hygiene even she was so young.

How ADRA contributed to this change :

ADRA organized Mothers’ Club in Bunleang’s village and to share knowledge to improve the health of mothers and their children.

Why this change is important :

This good habit in small children will inspire the adults to follow.
