Disaster Response after Mondulkiri Market Fire

Disaster Response after Mondulkiri Market Fire

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Cambodia and the Cambodia Adventist Mission (CAM), together with support from the church members and the Christensen Adventist Primary school in Mondulkiri, were able to distribute food packages to 220 families following a fire on February 10, 2018 that burned down Senmonorom Market in Mondulkiri provincial town. The fire burned 80% of the market including 223 market shop/homes, killed two people and seriously injured three more.  Each family received 25 kg of rice, 53 packets of instant noodles, 10 tins of fish, 1 kg of salt, and 1 liter of cooking oil.

The fire began at 2:00 am on February 10, 2018 from an electrical short according to local authorities. Families lost their possessions and livelihoods and suffered great shock.  In a daze they sought shelter with their relatives, neighbours, the pagoda and the government hall. Red Cross immediately provided mats, blankets and some food. When ADRA and CAM met with local authorities, they said that there was an urgent need for more food. They explained that while families have at least temporary shelter, it will take some time to re-establish their livelihoods and could not yet find enough food to support their families.

ADRA worked with CAM and local church leaders, including teachers from Christiansen Adventist School to package the food kits.  Working with government workers, the team distributed the food to the 220 affected families.

We would like to ask everyone to continue to pray for the affected families as they are seeking to restore their livelihoods and homes and especially those who are mourning for the loss of their loved ones. Thank you for all your prayers and support!
